Elem Schools

As a Catholic school community, our mission is to cultivate a Christ-centered learning environment where every child is given opportunities to excel and is recognized as a child of God.

Our vision is for all children to be life-long learners who live out their faith with conviction, compassion, and commitment to use their God-given talents to make positive contributions to the whole world while building up the Kingdom of God.

Upon graduation from the elementary schools of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona Johnstown students will:

- Demonstrate the love of Christ by living and practicing their faith with conviction, compassion, and commitment.

-Exhibit a solid academic foundation to be successful life-long learners using problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking.

-Exemplify responsibility, service, and integrity through their daily words and actions.

"Our Catholic schools are amazing places where students encounter the Lord and share the incredible journey of faith with each other. With the support of parents, guidance of awesome teachers, and the use of the latest technology and curriculum, students are challenged every day to reach their full potential. Striving for excellence in the classroom supports their call to service of others as missionary disciples who encourage everyone to know who they are to focus on their place in God's plan."

A passion for learning

When students feel safe and encouraged by their teachers, they feel motivated to engage and encourage one another. Focusing on the unique and special gifts each person brings to the learning environment, helps students to feel confident in their strengths and recognize we all have areas to grow and improve. We embrace the truth that we are all constantly learning and growing, from the principal down to the youngest kindergartener and each new day is a day to discover something new.

a PASSION FOR TEACHING

A true leader has to ignite the passion for teaching within the school environment. A leader has to find paths to motivate the staff and encourage them to further their professional development to assist them in becoming an awesome educator. The more the staff learns and develops, the more the students benefit.

Principal, St. Benedict Catholic School
Teaching is so much more than students sitting in desks. Teaching is making personal connections with children. Teaching is laughing and smiling while doing activities that makes learning fun. Teaching is that moment when a child’s internal lightbulb just clicks on and they get the concept you’re explaining to them; It’s celebrating those exciting moments with them, but also being there for them when they are going through a rough time. Teaching is genuinely wanting to share your faith and knowledge with the little people that will be our future! For some, a job is just a job. For others, like myself, it is a passion!

Teaching in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese has allowed me to integrate faith and values into the curriculum, shaping not just the minds but also the hearts of my students. It has been a blessing to contribute to an educational environment that emphasizes spiritual growth alongside academic excellence. This experience has been a cornerstone of my career, and I am grateful that I get to continue teaching in the diocese for many years to come.

Teaching gives me the opportunity to instill values in the next generation while sharing the gift of faith at the same time. While teaching I have the honor to perhaps make a real difference in my students' lives. Each day, there is a tangible opportunity to help God's little children grow in kindness and thoughtfulness so they can make a difference in the lives they, in turn, touch. How could I not be passionate about that?

A pASSION FOR CHRIST

Faith isn’t just something we teach—it’s the heart of who we are. A love for Christ shapes our classrooms, our relationships, and our commitment to forming students who seek truth, grow in wisdom, and serve with joy. We are called to create an environment where every child feels known, loved, and encouraged to become the person God intends them to be.

My passion for Christ is the center of my life. It inspires me as a parent, as a grandparent, as a friend and as an educator. I look at the example Christ set for us and turn to Him in the direction I take as an educator. In a world full of adults teaching children to just do what feels good, I want my students to understand there is a moral compass we should follow and His name is Jesus.

St. Nicholas Catholic School
We learn about and celebrate Christ every day at school, especially altogether at mass on Friday - that is my favorite time. Our teachers and school leaders teach us about Him and live His word, serving as models of Christ. I’m glad I go to a Catholic school because I’m around other kids and adults who love Christ like I do.
